Georgia's ancient capital and spiritual heart — a UNESCO day trip from Tbilisi.
Mtskheta was Georgia's capital for 800 years and is where the country was Christianized in the 4th century — half of UNESCO's Georgia listings are here. It's a small town, walkable in 3 hours, and 25 minutes from Tbilisi. Perfect half-day trip.
The must-sees are Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century, houses Christ's robe by tradition), Jvari Monastery on the hilltop opposite, and Samtavro Convent. Skip the tacky tourist stalls between them.
