Gori is best known as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin — his childhood home and the Stalin Museum are the main attraction — but for most travelers the real reason to visit is Uplistsikhe, a 3,000-year-old cave city 10 km east. Together they make a full day trip from Tbilisi and are usually combined with Mtskheta on the way back. The town itself, damaged during the 2008 war, has a fortress on the hill and a modest downtown.
