How to Get to Kakheti

The birthplace of wine — 8,000 years of qvevri tradition in one valley.

Kakheti covers a large area — Telavi is 100 km east of Tbilisi (2h), Sighnaghi is 110 km southeast (2h). Both have direct marshrutkas from Tbilisi's Ortachala or Samgori stations for 8–10 GEL, but with wineries scattered across villages, a private driver or organized tour is dramatically more practical.

Highlights

  • Marshrutka Tbilisi→Telavi: 10 GEL, 2h, from Ortachala
  • Marshrutka Tbilisi→Sighnaghi: 8 GEL, 2h, from Samgori
  • Kakheti day tour from Tbilisi: $35–55, 10h, 3 wineries + Sighnaghi
  • Private driver 2 days: $200–280, unlimited winery stops
  • Rental car: best flexibility but designated driver required — Kakheti roads are twisty
