Things to Do in Kakheti

The birthplace of wine — 8,000 years of qvevri tradition in one valley.

Kakheti is Georgia's wine country — 70% of the country's grapes grow here, and the qvevri winemaking method (UNESCO Intangible Heritage) is 8,000 years old. Sighnaghi is the postcard town, Telavi the working capital, and dozens of family cellars sit in between.

For a first visit, base 2 nights in Sighnaghi or Telavi and cover 4–5 wineries plus one monastery. Do not try to see everything in a day trip from Tbilisi — you'll spend more time in a car than in a cellar.

Highlights

  • Sighnaghi Old Town + walls — walkable in 2 hours, sunset viewpoints
  • Bodbe Monastery + Saint Nino spring — 15 min from Sighnaghi
  • Pheasant's Tears winery (Sighnaghi) — natural wine pioneer
  • Chateau Mere / Schuchmann / Kindzmarauli winery visits with tastings
  • Ikalto and Alaverdi monasteries — active monastic winemaking
  • Tsinandali estate + garden — 19th-century royal residence
