Best Time to Visit Svaneti

Georgia's remote mountain kingdom — medieval stone towers and 5,000-m peaks.

Svaneti's trekking season is short and specific: mid-June to late September. Outside that window, mountain passes are snowed shut, the Mestia–Ushguli trail is impassable, and many guesthouses close. July and August are our peak booking months.

Winter (December–March) is a completely different Svaneti — snow-packed tower-houses, small-scale skiing at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, and cozy guesthouse fireplaces. Beautiful but not for first-time visitors; the road can close for days.

Highlights

  • Mid-June: passes open, wildflowers, some snowfields on high trails
  • July–August: peak trekking, warmest, book guesthouses 2 months ahead
  • September: our pick — dry, clear, 12°C, empty trails
  • October: autumn colors, first snow on peaks, guesthouses start closing
  • Nov–May: winter — skiing possible, trekking closed, plan flex days
