Georgia's most remote inhabited region — reachable only by 4×4 over Abano Pass.
June through September only. July and August are our recommendation — August festivals (Atengenoba) are a highlight if timing works. The pass often becomes impassable in early October.
Highlights
- Late June–early July: passes fully open, wildflower peak
- July: warmest, alpine flowers, shepherds bringing herds up
- August: our pick — Atengenoba festival + reliable weather
- September: dry, cooler, less crowded, road still open
- Oct–May: pass CLOSED — do not attempt
