How to Get to Svaneti

Georgia's remote mountain kingdom — medieval stone towers and 5,000-m peaks.

Svaneti is 470 km from Tbilisi (9–10 hours by road) or a 1-hour flight from Natakhtari airstrip near Tbilisi to Mestia. The flight (Vanilla Sky airline, ~$65 one-way) is scenic but weight-limited and cancels in bad weather — always keep a Plan B.

The overland route goes via Zugdidi: overnight train Tbilisi→Zugdidi ($15 sleeper), then marshrutka Zugdidi→Mestia (30 GEL, 3.5 hours, spectacular mountain road). This is what most independent travelers do.
