Mtskheta is where Georgia was Christianized in 337 AD and served as the country's capital for a millennium before Tbilisi. It sits at the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers, 20 km northwest of Tbilisi, and is Georgia's most visited day-trip destination. The entire historic town is a UNESCO World Heritage site organized around Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — the burial place of Georgian kings — with the 6th-century Jvari Monastery perched on the cliff opposite. It's an easy half-day from Tbilisi and often combined with the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe or the Stalin Museum in Gori.
