Visa Policy in Georgia — The Complete Guide (2026)

Sakartvelo Tours June 23, 2026VisaSafetyPractical Tips

Citizens of 95+ countries can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 1 year. See the full list, required documents, and border crossing rules.

Georgia has one of the most liberal visa regimes in the world, making it a dream destination for digital nomads and long-term travelers. This guide is part of our broader topic: [Is Georgia safe to travel?](/blog/is-georgia-safe-to-travel).

Who Can Enter Visa-Free?

Up to 1 Year (Visa-Free): Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Ukraine, and 80+ other countries.

e-Visa: For countries not included in the visa-free list, you can apply for a visa online within 5 days through the official portal: evisa.gov.ge.

A full, updated list is available on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (geoconsul.gov.ge).

Required Documents at the Border

  • Passport, valid for at least 3 months after your intended departure date from Georgia.
  • Proof of Accommodation (hotel reservation, apartment rental, or invitation letter) — while not always requested, it’s best to have it ready.
  • Return Ticket — recommended, especially if you are arriving by air.

Proof of financial means is generally not requested, but border officers have the right to ask.

Border Crossing Options

By Air: Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi international airports. Kutaisi is often the most budget-friendly option (served by Wizz Air and Ryanair).

By Land: From Turkey (Sarpi, Vale), Armenia (Bagratashen, Sadakhlo), and Azerbaijan (Red Bridge, Lagodekhi). From Russia — only via Verkhny Lars (Kazbegi) — though crossing times can vary significantly.

What if 1 Year Isn't Enough?

Leaving and re-entering the country — the so-called "visa run" — is legal and a very common practice. The Bagratashen crossing into Armenia is just 2 hours from Tbilisi. Alternatively, you can apply for a long-term residence permit (Investor, D-Visa).

Practical Tips at the Border

  • Don't confuse your "departure date" with your "visa-free expiry date" — the visa-free period begins exactly on the day of entry.
  • Keep your hotel booking as a PDF on your phone.
  • The entry stamp is important — make sure the officer stamps your passport upon arrival.
