Best Time to Visit Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)

The most photographed mountain scene in Georgia — Gergeti Trinity beneath Mt. Kazbek.

June through September is Kazbegi's window: alpine wildflowers, clear mornings, and every trail open. September is our operator pick — daytime 15–20°C, dry, and Mount Kazbek shows itself more reliably than in humid July.

December–March turns Kazbegi into a serious winter destination — Gudauri (30 min south) is Georgia's biggest ski resort, and the drive up becomes spectacular in fresh snow. But the Gergeti hike is snowed in and the church road requires 4×4 with chains.

Highlights

  • May: Truso Valley opens, Gergeti still snowy, waterfalls at peak flow
  • June: alpine flowers everywhere, 18°C days — great hiking month
  • July–Aug: warmest, most crowded, Kazbek often cloud-covered by 11:00
  • September: our pick — dry, clear, 15°C, fewer crowds
  • October: autumn colors on lower slopes, first snow on peaks
  • Dec–March: Gudauri skiing, deep snow, Gergeti hike closed
